🇦🇺 Oz Lotto: The Complete Guide to Australia's Tuesday Lottery

7 of 47 with three supplementary numbers — rules, seven divisions and why 3 matches do not always win

Oz Lotto has been Australia's answer to the big international jackpots since 1994: seven main numbers from 47, every Tuesday, and a division system that demands more attention to the extra numbers than most other lotteries. This guide explains how the game works, all seven divisions with exactly calculated odds and who the lottery suits. As of October 2026.

💡 Context:

With seven main numbers from 47 the jackpot odds (1 : 62,891,499) are about 2.8 times worse than UK Lotto (1 : 22,528,738 per line) but about 2.2 times better than tier 1 of Lotto 6aus49 (1 : 139,838,160 including the Superzahl). In return the lower divisions are generous: overall roughly every 50th bet wins something.

🎯 How Oz Lotto Works, Step by Step

The process

  1. Choose 7 numbers from 1 to 47 — or use the random pick.
  2. A game costs approx. A$1.45; sales run until shortly before the draw.
  3. On Tuesdays a total of 10 balls are drawn from the barrel of 47 numbers: the first seven are the winning numbers, the last three the supplementary numbers.
  4. The division results from the number of matches and from whether at least one supplementary number is on your ticket.
  5. Division 1 is a jackpot pool: if it is not won, the pool grows into the next draw; several winners share it.

🔑 Special Features: Supplementary Numbers and Prize Boosts

🎯 Three supplementary numbers

Until May 2022 two supplementary numbers were drawn, since then three. They decide in three divisions: Division 2 (6 + supplementary), Division 4 (5 + supplementary) and Division 7 (3 + supplementary). It is enough if at least one of your unmatched numbers is a supplementary number. With 4 matches (Division 6) the supplementary numbers are irrelevant.

⚠️ The 3-match trap:

If you match exactly 3 main numbers you only win if a supplementary number is also on your ticket (odds 1 : 71). Mathematically even more bets get 3 matches without a supplementary number — about 1 : 27 —, but they win nothing.

⭐ Prize Boost events

Several times a year the operators temporarily raise the prize amounts of Divisions 2 to 7 ("Prize Boost"). The probabilities do not change as a result.

💰 All Divisions with Odds

64 matches1 : 182irrelevant
73 + supplementary1 : 71at least 1

We calculated the odds from the combination counts; they agree with the operators' figures (Divisions 2 and 3 may differ by ±1 depending on the source because of rounding). In the sources we checked, the operators do not state a fixed percentage split of the prize fund per division; that is why we show odds instead of pool shares. Division 1 is a pool prize and is shared among all winners.

💡 Overall chance of winning:

1,249,536 of 62,891,499 combinations win a division, which equals roughly 1 : 50 (operator figure: 1 : 51). If every 50th bet wins something, that does not mean the total covers your stakes — many Division 7 prizes are small.

⚖️ Honest Note: Random Stays Random

⚠️ Good to know:

Every draw is an independent random event. No system, no frequency analysis and no AI raises your chance of Division 1 — every combination of seven numbers has the same probability of 1 : 62,891,499. Statistics describe past draws; they do not predict the next. The expected value of a bet is below the stake. Only play with money you can afford to lose and set a budget. 💡 Who Is Oz Lotto For?

  • ✅ Players who like many prize tiers — seven divisions with about 1 : 50 for any prize
  • ✅ Statistics fans — 7 of 47 offers far more combination variety
  • ✅ Low entry price of around A$1.45 per game
  • ⚠️ Jackpot odds of 1 : 62.9M — much worse than Belgian Lotto or UK Lotto
  • ⚠️ The supplementary rules are more complex than in lotteries with a single bonus number
  • ⚠️ From Germany/Europe: Official participation is tied to Australia. From here it only works through third-party providers, which mostly bet on the draw results; winnings are then usually paid by the provider, not by the Australian lottery. Check the licence, fees and the legal situation yourself — we do not sell tickets and give no legal advice.
